About Us  Advisory Board John R. Walter Mr. Walter is the retired President and Chief Operating Officer of AT&T, where he was responsible for day-to-day operations of the company's core long-distance, local, wireless and on-line services businesses, as well as its credit card and outsourcing businesses. Mr. Walter, who holds a B.S. degree in business administration from Miami University of Ohio, began his career in 1969 at R.R. Donnelley & Sons, a world leader in the print industry. After holding sales positions of increasing responsibility, Mr. Walter held several executive posts, becoming President of the company in 1987. In 1989 he was appointed Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer, a position he retained through 1996, when he resigned to join AT&T. Mr. Walter serves on the board of directors of Abbott Laboratories, Deere & Company, Manpower, Inc., Applied Graphics Technologies and SNP Corporation of Singapore. Mr. Walter also serves on the International Advisory Council of the Singapore Economic Development Board and is a director of the Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Corporation, the Executives' Club of Chicago, Chicago Council on Foreign Relations and Steppenwolf Theatre. In addition, Mr. Walter is a member of The Business Roundtable, The Business Council, the American Society of Corporate Executives, The Economic Club of Chicago and The Commercial Club of Chicago.
